Michigan Rockers Sue Trump Campaign for Copyright Infringement
Band Alleges Unauthorized Use of 'Woke Up This Morning'
Damages Sought for Political Exploitation of Music
Royal Rockers, a Michigan-based rock band, has filed a lawsuit against the Trump campaign for allegedly using their song "Woke Up This Morning" without permission.
The complaint, filed in federal court in Detroit, alleges that the Trump campaign used the song without a license in a promotional video posted on social media.
The band's attorney, David A. Walczyk, said in a statement that the Trump campaign's use of the song was "a clear and blatant infringement of the band's copyright."
The lawsuit alleges that the Trump campaign's use of the song caused the band "substantial financial harm" and "irreparable harm to their reputation.
The band is seeking damages for the unauthorized use of their song, as well as an injunction to prevent the Trump campaign from using it in the future.
The Trump campaign has not yet commented on the lawsuit.
The use of music without permission in political campaigns is a common problem, and several artists have sued over such unauthorized use in recent years.
In 2016, the Rolling Stones sued Donald Trump for using their song "You Can't Always Get What You Want" at his campaign rallies.
The case was eventually settled out of court, and the Trump campaign agreed to stop using the song.
The Royal Rockers' lawsuit is the latest in a string of cases involving the unauthorized use of music in political campaigns.
It is important for political campaigns to obtain permission from artists before using their music, or they risk facing legal action.
