The Romanian Flag: A Symbol of National Identity
Meaning and Origin
The Romanian flag is a vertical tricolor consisting of three equal stripes in blue, yellow, and red. The flag's width-to-length ratio is approximately 2 to 3. The current design was adopted in 1834 and has remained unchanged since then.
Blue Stripe
The blue stripe represents the sky and freedom. It symbolizes the Romanian people's longing for independence and their commitment to preserving their sovereignty.
Yellow Stripe
The yellow stripe represents the sun and wheat. It symbolizes the country's agricultural heritage and the importance of the agricultural industry to the Romanian economy.
Red Stripe
The red stripe represents blood and sacrifice. It honors the brave Romanians who have fought for their country's freedom and independence throughout history.
Evolution of the Flag
The Romanian flag has undergone several changes throughout its history. The first known design featured a blue field with a white eagle holding a sword and a rod. This flag was used by the Principality of Wallachia in the 14th century. In the 16th century, the Principality of Moldavia adopted a flag featuring a red field with a yellow aurochs, a symbol of strength and courage. In 1834, the two principalities united to form the Kingdom of Romania. The current flag was adopted as a symbol of this union and has been in use ever since.
